Tough Mudder is considering adding a new extreme obstacle challenge to its schedule and is also considering adding an “elite competitive” category to World’s Toughest Mudder beginning next year.
A survey recently sent by Tough Mudder to some World’s Toughest Mudder participants and Tough Mudder Legionnaires sought input on a proposed new extreme obstacle course challenge to be held regionally.
The details of the event are obviously fluid, since Tough Mudder officials were seeking input on how to shape the event. But the preliminary plans, according to the survey, would be to give participants 8 hours to complete as many laps as possible on a 5-mile course of around 20 obstacles.
The course will feature classic Tough Mudder obstacles, along with a blend of unique and enhanced obstacles, and a portion of the event will occur overnight. The event will be held in various locations around the globe.
According to the survey, only the best venues with premium terrain will be selected, and each regional event will feature a unique signature obstacle. The event will be open to both competitive and non-competitive athletes looking for their next challenge.
The event is not a direct qualifier for, but will be connected to, World’s Toughest Mudder. It will act as a gateway for participants to qualify for the new “Elite Competitive” category at the 2017 World’s Toughest Mudder event.
Plans for the new event include cash prizing, which will be distributed to the top male, female and team who can run the most laps in an 8-hour period. Prizes start at $4,000 for the top male and female, and $10,000 for the top team of two or more. Other prizes will be distributed by overall mileage achievements of 25, 40, and 50 miles.
Among the aspects of the event the survey seeks input on are how many hours it should be and potential start times.
The survey also seemed to suggest that the new “elite competitive” aspects at World’s Toughest Mudder will be elite competitor pit spaces and an elite competitor start time. The changes are set to begin with the 2017 World’s Toughest Mudder.
